Paraphrased from a Bureau of Land Management brochure:
This large flat mesa is known as "Blanco Mesa" for its unusual white surface. At the upper reaches of the existing cliffs, layers of near-white rock can be seen. These layers are known as the Todilto Formation, formed during the Jurassic Age. The Todilto Formation is composed of brown limestone at the base and is overlain by white gypsum up to 100 feet thick. The white gypsum is mined and shipped to Albuquerque and Bernalillo for the manufacture of wallboard to be used in home construction.
