Family Tettigoniidae (Katydids)
Subfamily Phaneropterinae (False Katydids)
Genus Phaneroptera
Species nana (Mediterranean Katydid)
This katydid is not native to North America, and prior to them being recorded in NY, was known to be established in the US only in California. Many thanks to Eric Eaton and David J Ferguson from Bugguide.net for their help identifying this unexpected species. We had been seeing nymphs in Central Park since 2006. There are now pics on Bugguide from several other locations in NYC.
