Lepidote rhododendrons are also termed scaly (the underside of the leaves show patterns of scales, which are flattened round hairs, clearly visible with a hand lens), or small-leaf (their leaves are usually smaller than elepidote rhododendron leaves). Lepidote rhododendron flowers are also usually smaller than those of elepidote rhododendrons.
