The smallest owl in the world, the elf owl, breeds in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. This fantastic little owl is both difficult to photograph and exciting to watch. It took me about 12 years to develop the techniques to take images of elf owls carrying food into their nests. The nests are in Saguaro cactus holes and, for the most part, are greater than 16 feet above the ground.
