Without seeing the head, I'd almost think this bird was some sort of grouse or quail. Wing feathers remind me of a pheasant.

Thanks for the photograph of the Northern Flicker. I have been trying to identify this bird in my front yards for months. All the photographs on your site are wonderful.

I love the patterns on these guy's feathers. It's like they have all types of different birds put into one little one :]
