Highland County is located in the Allegheny Mountains midway between the eastern border of West Virginia and western border of the Shenandoah Valley. It has the highest mean elevation of any county in Virginia. Monterey is the county seat. Photos in this gallery were taken on my exploratory trip to the area in search of birds nesting at some of the higher elevations. Unfortunately my tripod was left leaning against a tree at home so not a lot of quality bird images from the trip. However, this is an incredibly beautiful area and am already planning my next trip. Most of the images in this gallery were photographed while driving around exploring the area and a few of the barns were taken across the state line in West Virginia.
