Doni ("Squid") and I played hooky on a beautiful Wednesday, October 29th. We drove down to Aransas Pass and fished one of my favorite areas, East Flats. Squid caught his very first red on fly and that made our day. We both went on to catch about 4 each and just had a great time on a perfect fall day.
I loaded up the boat that night for an early start on Wednesday. Picked up the Squid at 6 for the 3 hour drive. I was determined to put the large sea creature onto his first fly caught redfish and had to go to a place that I just knew would pay off.
Two minutes after shutting off the engine, we had our first fish spotted. Unfortunately for the first hour or so, we found some fish but couldn't force them to open their mouths. They were really spooky too in the super skinny water that even bottomed out the HPX-T a few times as we poled around.
Then I spotted two fish cruising across the bow toward 11 o'clock at about 60-70 feet. Now the Squid has never connected with a red on fly, but let me tell you, the boy can lay out some line. He dropped a small Horbey spoon fly about 3 feet in front of both fish. Two strips later and the lead fish made a great charge and inhaled the fly. Squid was squealing like kid at recess as the red peeled off some line.
