Using this wall for protection the 51st NY and 51st Pennsylvania Regiments managed to get across this bridge against Confederate troops lodged in the hill beyond. Although there were only 550 Confederate soldiers defending the hill at this time, many others having been drawn off for the other battles, and 11,000 Union forces waiting to cross the bridge, General Burnside apparently had trouble getting enough men willing to die so other's could safely get across.
