June 1, 2004

Today, one month after my bicycle crash, I received the bill from the hospital--$1,162.75. Not bad, I’d say. And my insurance covered all but my emergency room deductible of $50.00. I’ve spent probably 3-4 times that amount on gauze, non-stick sterile pads, tape and hydrogen peroxide.

Following this I went straight to the bathroom to remove the bandage from today. Though many people have told me that the wounds will heal faster UNcovered, my experience this weekend of keeping both wounds covered and wearing long pants, so I could concentrate on taking pictures and not on swabbing oozing ointment and whatever it is that oozes from both wounds as I walked around the Mall, shows that the covered wounds heal faster. So I’ve covered the big gash in my knee and the road burn on my calf for the past five days and have seen significant healing of both. At last. Nonetheless, the non-stick bandage on my road burn still requires hydrogen peroxide to urge it off. I’m getting used to this unpleasantness and thought it a fitting photo of the day.

The focus isn’t where I intended it. I kept moving as I poured and bent over the camera to aim and shoot, so the camera ended up focusing on the bottle instead of the wound.

I hope it is very much better by now.
I read the comments and about the Cicada.
I had never heard of these but Google soon showed me one!

You need a huge tube of neosporin for that mess. I believe it works miracles. Peroxide only cleans it. the neosporin heals. big boo boo as zack would say.

Looking good Mark. BTW, did the doctor recommend using the H2O2? As I understand it, the tendency is to stay away from that stuff for open wounds. Personally I think that Normal Saline would be better for removing the gauze from the wound.

Bikes are nice things, with or without engine, but once the tarmac jumps up and hits you, it hurts. Hope you recovered well.

Robin, my head? Huh?

Funny Jeanne. Today I walked into work and heard these two women screaming over some dumb cicada that had gotten in the building. I passed them and they went nuts when they saw one hanging on to the back of my shirt collar. I thought I felt something on my neck earlier. So I flicked it off to their shrieks of horror. Sorry, I did not save it to bring home.

Well as sister Jeanne say, "gag me with a spoon." However I'm delighted you have mostly recovered.
BTW, how much did they charge you to have your head examined? LOL
