Venus

I tried to shoot Venus tonight through my 8" Newtonian Relfector at 306 power. (I think it was at 306.) I couldn't control the shutter speed and the Earth was turning too fast to use a tripod for the camera. This was handheld, pointing through the eyepiece, macro mode. I had forgotten to turn off the flash so I got 1/60 shutter for this and the flash went off, but I cropped those effects out. Not great but not easy to do without the right tools. (This view is inverted and upside down. I guess I could have corrected it in PS.)

Nikon Coolpix 3100
1/60s f/5.6 at 5.8mm iso400 with Flash full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

mark, what you were trying to do was nearly impossible, the fact that you got something is atestament to your ingenuity.

I'm glad to know you're up an around again since your fall...I love a DARK sky. When I go to Wisconsin in the summer I go out to the woods and lie in a big meadow opening and watch the zillions of stars I can't see here in light polluted Florida. Nice work, here, Mark.
