January 31, 2004

My first photo of a stranger. I was taking a photo of three mariachi frogs outside this restaurant while she was setting tables for lunch. When she moved to this table by the window I couldn't resist taking her photo. The best photo was the one I missed a fraction of a second later. "Moi?!" She smiled and shrugged.

No I didn't buy a Fuji S2. I rented it to shoot some ice hockey photos. (Cheaper than film.)

Nice shot Mark. It looks as though you enjoyed using an D-SLR!

Mesmerizing shot. Strikes me as a carefully crafted comosite.

I could post them for you. They were blurry. I'm not used to being able to change my ISO so I didn't think to do that for a faster shutter speed.

Interesting shot, Mark. I really like all the reflections surrounding her. I want to see the "mariachi frogs" too (that just sounds interesting... any chance you'd post that one for us? :)

Ray, her head is actually framed by the window frame across the street. This was not something I noticed as I took the photo, at least not consciously. It was a bold move to shoot her from less than 20 feet with a monster looking lens on the camera. But we had made eye contact a few minutes earlier as I was photographing the frogs. Her smile and laugh at me then indicated that they are a popular tourist photo attraction and that she was friendly. I was perfectly calm because of that, Chris. Now, I think I'll visit the restaurant some Saturday for lunch and bring a 5x5 print. With any luck, John, she'll chat and pose for another shot rather than stab me with the cutlery. :)

Me again! I've just noticed that her ear appears to be in front of a window frame reflection which must be an illusion, surely? That's REALLY neat!

Actually rather well done and love how her face/head is framed. Was the next shot where she came out and battered you with the tray?? ;))

Great candid shot, Mark - I like her expression! Nice touch with the reflections of the road, too.

Mark, I love shots like these. It takes balls to take a shot like this, and the fact that she was so receptive in the shot you couldn't quite capture just gives you confidence and the appetite to go back for more. Really flatter her and go in for a coffee and shoot one day!

Well done Mark.

In these situations, or when I ask a stranger to pose, I find it so difficult to remain calm and think about what I am doing. I tend to rush and spoil the shot.

Glad you went with this one! It's really great, love her expression, and I can imagine her expression after the fact. Sometimes the best shots are the ones printed in our minds!!! But this is great!
