10-JAN-2004

January 10, 2004

I was not planning to post a self-portrait today. I spent the day on the Mall freezing cold. (The high was 21 F or -6 celsius, with a wind chill of 0 /-17 celsius. Not common temperatures here.) The sky was brilliantly clear again. I revisited the chillis before warming up in the Sackler and Freer Art Galleries. Then walked a mile and a half home.

After dinner I set-up to experiment with a self-portrait for another day. I don't know how Jeanne managed to get the camera to focus and select the correct exposure without being in the frame. I ended up bringing in the music stand again as a place holder. This photo was the line up shot. Several bad exposures, I needed a reflector on the opposite side. The final photo was not really satisfactory. I was WAY too visible and a bit blurry. This one is not so revealing. Enough darkness on my face and I liked the music on the edge. (Certainly this could be better set-up, music lower turned, blah, blah, blah) but it was just a warm-up, yet it reveals without being stark. The music is Arvo Part's 1990 (SATB) setting of "The Beatitudes"--positively difficult. It's scheduled for Sunday, February 15th.

Yes Mark. This picture is a success. Or I should say, this self-portrait is a success.

Yep, me as ditto below! I find it difficult to do self-portraits, too, but this has worked out beautifully.
Good luck with the Beautitudes!!

I agree with everyone. Very well done. Great mood with the black background and the music.

I like this, Mark - it has a lot of "mood" to it. Love the completely black background, and the way it contrasts with the brightly lit music page. Well done - and an obviously Herculian effort, as well! LOL

I did see the outtakes. They are actually good in their own way. I will try moving the camera about six inches or so closer so I can reach around to set and trigger it. Thanks.

in other words I dont know how to read music! :)

Mark, I agree with Jeanne and Ray. The shadow gives you a mystic..eyes appear intense but sensitive..the music sheet caught my eye as well..tried reading the score..but these eyes of mine!

Mark, I think this turned out well. I like th dark side of the image, you look mysterious. The music sheet is nice too, as it's a way to show another of your talents!

As for getting the camera ot meter when I wasn't in the frame, I tried to stay in teh frame but reach around to the back of the camera to set the timer, granted it was difficult, and didn't always work....Have a look at the OUTTAKES

Good image, Mark. I've been thinking about a self-portrait too, and like you, I want to be partly in shade. Maybe I will do it eventually.
