The hike to Surprise and Amphitheater Lakes started out flat and eventually became a slight ramp-like trail with long switchbacks. My first day hiking in a long time and I picked a longish route. 11 miles round trip with a 3,000 ft. gain in elevation. The trial topped out at 9,698 ft.
