The Storm of 2026

**********************

We had just sat down to dinner to hear a loud boom and feel the whole house shake. A giant 40-year-old Maple tree from our West side yard fell across the entire back of our house and on to the deck. The entire deck was covered in tree, which went beyond the deck and the whole way to the end of our 120' long house. All back doors were blocked by "tree". I had been out on the deck just 4 minutes before this happened.

Morning revealed that this was only one of two of the mature Maple Trees to be taken out. The other one ended up across the roof of our house causing considerable damage and no less than 9 holes in the roof. The deck railing has been destroyed, lighting destroyed, gutters torn off, our 7 skylights severely damaged, the deck surface damage (and heaving) and deck furniture damaged or destroyed. Not to mention to what happened to all my houseplants on the deck. These maples were not the only trees involved in the incident. At least a half dozen of our other mature trees also sustained substantial damage. They either have to be removed and/or have lost large parts of them. Things like this don't just happen to "other people". One should never lose sight of that...

Meanwhile, our next-door neighbors lost their entire tree line between our yards. The neighbors across the street had their trampoline blow away and downed tree branches. And for a while, there was a tree (I don't know whose) down and blocking the entire road out of our area. The autumn leaves have not started to drop in our area yet, but the ground everywhere is now covered in torn off tree leaves. Power and the internet and TV service have been pretty much gone since the storm, but with Spectrum only briefly working before going out again. That's nothing in comparison to all the natural disaster everywhere. The contractor, who will probably be doing repairs, said that he thinks we were hit by a small tornado and not a normal microburst - if microburst can be considered "normal". Who knows? This gallery is a pressure valve during a stressful time that too will pass. And maybe in another 20 years, the damaged trees (or their eventual replacements) will look like trees again.

Other areas of the Metro were also badly hit by the rounds of severe weather. Some had, not only their house, but also both their cars crushed by downed trees. So, maybe we were "lucky". Again, things like this don't always happen to just "other people". None of us know when it could be us. One should never lose sight of that... And be grateful when it isn't.
