I really thought this https://pbase.com/britestar/image/175984627 would be the end of my annuals. But here we are in December with snow on the ground & the above petunia plant having over a dozen flowers. A Calibrachoa ("Rising Star") is also still blooming. This is crazy!!! Nighttime tempts have been in the teens. The area's killing, growing-season-ending, hard freeze was back on October 30th. These plants have been outside, without any protection, since May.
Whoever heard of outdoors blooming petunias in the Midwest in December with snow on the ground? It's certainly a new experience for me. Tonight, record setting cold of 6 degrees Fahrenheit is expected. So, this finally should REALLY the end of my Summertime annuals outdoors. Kind of sad because these survivors definitely were a rarity.
NOTE: 12-04-25 After a low of 9 degrees last night and a high today of 26 degrees Fahrenheit, the above petunia STILL has some untouched, perfect flowers on it. Fewer than yesterday but it is still flowering. Absolutely amazing!!!
