The Villain Era 1-25-25

I remember all the lean years. Back then, everyone loved the Kansas City Chiefs that couldn't quite win really big. Less than 10 years ago, they were still an "underdog". People everywhere liked that about them.

But now... https://www.nbcnews.com/sports/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs-vs-buffalo-bills-afc-championship-game-chiefs-becam-rcna188786

Read the link and think. If the Chiefs go down, who will be the NEXT villain? There will always be one.

Meanwhile, win or lose today, loyal Chief fans will still love their favorite team, just as they did before superstar Patrick Mahomes arrived on the scene. And they will continue to love their favorite team (the Chiefs) long after the Mahomes era is over. Red Fridays are (and long have been) a Kansas City tradition. Despite almost everyone else across the country currently rooting against the Chiefs, community spirit here is high. And isn't that what football (or baseball or whatever) is REALLY about???

We'll be cheering on the NFL's current perceived "villains" today. If they don't win, it will be disappointing but not the end of the love this area has for the Kansas City Chiefs. Chief fans loved them just as much as underdogs.

Everyone on the outside loves an underdog, too. Unfortunately, for varying reasons, it seems that few (outside the true fan base) embrace a repeat winner and certainly not one that has done all the Kansas City Chiefs have done since 2019.

The Chiefs are now being villainized across the country. Last year, that fact shocked me. This year, I don't care. That's the hater's problem. The Chiefs are not villains. They are just at the top at what they do. Human nature has proven that it is easier to like an underdog and also want to knock down the top dog. The underdog does not pose a repeat threat for other's advancement. For all you Chief haters, rest assured that there will indeed come a day once again when the Chiefs are just another team beloved by their fans but not a significant threat for others.

Indeed, a Threepeat for the Chiefs would be a landmark in football history. But if that doesn't happen this year, that will still be okay. It was the journey to this point that has been so much fun for us Chiefs fans. Just as their journey in years past as underdogs.

I repeat: read the article linked above. And then think. Why hate so much??? And who might be the next perceived villains that you'll love to hate?

In the end, unless you are getting a paycheck from the sport, it is just a game. Being from CA where the teams here routinely come and go depending on how much they can extract from the community regarding new stadiums, etc. it is hard to get too excited, or have strong feelings one way or other.
