Books and More Books

My mom has always been an avid reader.
At her house, she had several floor-to-ceiling book cases (packed to the brim) lining the walls in multiple rooms; plus, a number of shorter bookcases, also overstuffed.

Finally, she also ended up turning an entire 10x10 walk-in-closet into even more floor-to-ceiling shelves for books. The local library joked that she might have as many books as they do!!! Beyond the books that she personally owns - and has reread several times - she also regularly takes books out from the library to read.

I've always considered myself a fairly prolific reader, but I would never measure up to her. I only have bookcases on half of one wall in my office. A few of those books are first editions that date back to the early 1800's. I also have other books, that aren't first editions, but also date back to the 19th Century. These were from my grandparents and great grandparents book collections. I think the most modern book in my office bookcases is close to 50 years old. I do have a small collection of more modern, hardbound books here and there, but for the most part, I read paperbacks that I pass on.

For "everyday reading", my mom can go through a book a day. Me? I generally read about one book only every 3 weeks. After I'm finished with several paperback books (usually read in the bathtub), I give my mom those books. After she reads them, she passes my old books on to her friends. She only keeps hard cover books in her countless bookcases.

As a very small child, I remember my mom being a very avid reader. After work, she would read for hours before bed. However, it wasn't until after she retired that her book collection grew and grew. Amazingly, she continues to read and reread everything she owns. Like me, she also prefers to read hard copy books that you can feel and smell; rather than eBooks. Reading old fashioned books is a totally different experience than reading on a computer screen. Meanwhile, she does play card games on the computer. LOL.

PS The paper bag on the closet floor in the photo above is also full of books. It is one of many.
