Vaccine Approval 1-31-22

“The Food and Drug Administration has granted full approval to Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine, the agency announced Monday.

Moderna’s vaccine, now known as Spikevax, was previously available under emergency use authorization and is the second coronavirus vaccine to get full FDA approval. Pfizer and BioNTech’s product was approved in August.

“While hundreds of millions of doses of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine have been administered to individuals under emergency use authorization, we understand that for some individuals, FDA approval of this vaccine may instill additional confidence in making the decision to get vaccinated,” acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock said in a statement.

Moderna, a biotechnology company, said Monday that Spikevax has been approved by regulators in more than 70 countries and that more than 800 million doses were shipped worldwide last year.”

This is all good news.

Working for a hospital, my husband was one of the first people in the USA to be fully vaccinated (2 shots) with the Moderna COVID vaccine way back a year ago in January 2021.

I later also got double vaxed (when eligible) with Moderna. Then, this past Fall (2021 before Omicron arrived on the scene), we both received a Moderna booster. Being older than me, my husband got his booster some weeks before I got mine.

So far, both the Moderna and the Pfizer boosters have only been approved for “Emergency Use”. However, with today’s news, I expect these boosters to eventually also get full FDA approval. Both Moderna and Pfizer expect to have an Omicron specific booster vaccine out sometime in late Spring of 2022. Moderna’s vaccine is currently in human trials.

A vibrant to accompany this good news. A booster againstOmicron would indeed be welcome although so far it seems to pose a much lesser threat than the other variants.

Excellent closeup of this beautiful flower, and I was happy to hear about Moderna's vaccine (since that's what I got).
