Frankly, I don’t understand Gen Zers or Millennials who “want it all” or nothing. At the time when you add a pet to your family, you need to think of the future & not just the present.

Being in the over 40 crowd, we would not add a pet “just because of” the pandemic; like so many have done.

However, if I could travel to Bella’s breeder in Italy right now, I would add another puppy to our house hold ASAP. A new puppy would honor Puffkin, Sparki, & Sari who went to the Rainbow Bridge during the pandemic. No puppy can replace any of them because they each were totally irreplaceable. As Bailey approaches middle age, we were thinking “new puppy” before the pandemic hit. We want the young dogs in the house to connect and have time with the older dogs; NOT replace them. For us, any possible new puppy will now have to wait until 2022 or whenever things are “safer for travel” than they are during a pandemic. Although losing our seniors has left a large hole in our hearts, we are in no hurry now to get a puppy. That will happen whenever the time is right.

As for life post pandemic, I know that our dogs will readjust to whatever we do. That’s the way it was “before”.

A lot of my “normal” job required extensive travel. I’m hopeful that my life post pandemic will go back to normal & again include work out in the field. Meanwhile, my office is at home. That means, a lot of time, too, with the dogs. Pre pandemic, the dogs were used to my not being home for weeks at a time. While at other times, they were also used to my being with them most of the day. My husband worked a normal 9 to 5 - plus a 90 minute daily commute. I don’t know if things will ever return to that, but if things did, the dogs would adjust and still be happy. Quality time with us is what makes them happy. In between, they have each other and are emotionally well adjusted. We have a family here.

Interestingly, my husband says our dogs do enjoy the novelty of now seeing him first time in the morning at 6 AM when he goes into our kitchen and logs in remotely to his office. But then, after they’ve said good morning and had a couple of minutes outside, the Chihuahuas only want to go back to bed until after I finally get up. The dogs and I have never been early risers. I’m alpha and the pack follows my lead. When I travel (or did in the past), my hubby does double duty in giving them super attention. That was possible; even with his 9 to 5, away-from-home, office job.

So I don’t understand why “1 in 3 Gen Zers and 1 in 5 millennials” would consider “rehoming their pets if they can't bring them to the office when they return to work.” Why???
