Canon EOS R6

My First Mirrorless Body

We've had the Canon "pro body" R5 on backorder for months, but I recently changed my mind to get the "serious hobbyist" body R6 instead. The R5 is equivalent to a 5D DSLR. The reason for my change of mind is that neither the R5 nor R6 would be IMO a replacement for my 1Dx. So whichever one I got would mean some compromise.

I didn't like the R-5's low light abilities & limited buffer. Plus I don't need the huge file sizes of the R5; combined with the loss of the other two elements in which the R6 does have an advantage.

Canon rumors also have a camera on the drawing board for a 2021/2022 release that might be more like my Pro DSLR 1Dx. That is something to look forward to in the future once the pandemic is history and life can go back to normal.
We all need something to look forward to.

With a new camera and my current photography, I don't need all the bells and whistles right now of the R-5; which we'd originally ordered several months ago. The R5 is still on back order for most. Reading the reviews from real people in real life shooting situations, I decided on the R-6 instead for "better" low light performance and "better" buffer for shooting personal, indoors images during the pandemic months... Although not as good in some other areas, those are the two big advantages of the R6 over the more expensive R5. If I were shooting normally out in the field, the R6 would lack some features I would need. But for shooting around home, the Prosumer body suits the bill for keeping me occupied during the upcoming long dismal winter. Being stuck indoors is going to be difficult.

I'll still be using the Canon 1Dx for any pro work I'm still able to do.
The new R6 is my transitional, "try-it" camera between DSLR and Mirrorless.

It is a special occasion gift from my very devoted husband who decided on his own, back when the R-5 was first announced in February, that I needed a new camera. We've been on a waiting list ever since. Although I hadn't been overly interested in moving away from my current DSLR's, my dear hubby has been trying to get me to try a mirrorless system for years. Now more or less being prisoners at home because of the pandemic, we have missed celebrating 8 months of normal life's personal milestones. The joy of a new camera brings a bit of excitement back to the never ending stress of day after day of semi confinement that currently all seem to blend together. Although this camera was intended to be a gift for my birthday months ago, my DH says the timing of it finally becoming available now seems like a gift for his up coming birthday, too. I think he's more excited about my getting the R-6 than I am. It's things like this that help to keep one's morale up during these difficult days when few things in life are normal. This new camera is a gift of love.

All of my current EF lens will fit the new body. So I don't need any additional lenses. I just have to learn how to use the new body. And find Wintertime photo subjects without leaving far from home.. Doing our best to survive the pandemic, it's going to be a very long and isolated Winter. Keeping active with a new camera will be a good thing.

I went through a similar process in choosing the Nikon Z6 rather than the Z7. I don't do professional work, but I have a D850 if I want super high resolution.
