Lick Observertory

Mount Hamilton, California

The University of California's Lick Observatory is located east of San Jose, California. It was founded in 1888 and remains among the most productive research observatories in the world. This image shows the dome of the historic 36-inch Crossley reflector, which is presently the second largest of its type in the world and was the world's largest telescope when it was completed in 1888. This instrument can be seen by visitors to the observatory.
