2004-11-20: Rouen fountain

Place du 19 avril 1944, Rouen, Seine-Maritime (76), France

On a day trip to Rouen, I saw this fountain. The combination of sculpture, soap suds, and the Gothic tower was striking, despite the leaden sky and the drizzle.
The statue commemorates the Allied bombardment of Rouen on the night from 18 to 19 April 1944. Intended to destroy the railroad stockyard at Sotteville in preparation for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the bombardment killed over four thousand civilians and destroyed much of the medieval city.
My alternate photo is cheerier, but since I recently posted another shop window picture, I chose this one instead.
Alternate photo: hi honey!

Wow! The sculpture is striking. What a sad occasion to commemorate. Commentary should probably say April rather than August (as on the headline), in prep. for D-Day.

For a moment there I thought it was Swanston St in Melbourne.
