The Monument comemorates the great fire of 1666 which started 220 feet from here in a bakers shop in Pudding Lane. The column is 220 feet high.The public can climb the 200+ stairs to the top for a grand view around the City of London.For many years there was just a rail but after a spate of people throwing themselves off in the 19c they totally enclosed it.
