Capitol Reef National Park - Waterpocket District

One of the most spectacular regions of Capitol Reef National Park is the Waterpocket District with its unique 100 mile long monocline or fold. Here the earth has been pushed up, folded and many different layers exposed. It is rugged country and looks very primative. To get there the Burr Trail turns to gravel at the entrance to the park and then descends a steep series of switchbacks into the valley below. This spectacular section of road drops 800 feet in about half a mile. Once in the "Fold" we turned north to one of the developed campgrounds in the park.
