One of the main off-road objectives was to visit Grand Staircase Escalante National Park and drive as much of the Hole In The Rock road as we could. HITR is a 50 mile dirt road leading southwest from the town of Escalante to the location above the Colorado River where the Mormon pioneers crossed the river in their wagons. We first stopped at the BLM office in Escalante for directions and information, then we were on our way. We stopped at Dance Hall Rock for a rest and look around. This location is a natural amphetheater where the pioneers used to gather and socialize. The only wildlife we saw there was a small rattlesnake coiled up trying go glean some warmth from the rock.
