A quick peek at the weather forcast said we should go South and get out of the rain belt across the Northern part of Washington. We decided to depart Kalispell and go South on US93 to Missoula and from there catch the Lewis and Clark Trail (US12) West. US12 crosses the Montana/Idaho border atop the Lolo Pass. There we encountered the Corps of Discovery re-enactment on the 200th anniversary. The group had been reenacting the famous journey day by day for about three years. The main part of the project occurred on the waterways which Lewis and Clark took, namely the Missouri River. It gave us a sense of historical perspective to know that 200 years before we crossed Lolo Pass, a nearly starving group of explorers had been there too. The re-enactors dressed in period clothes, slept in canvas tents under blankets and carried with them equipment and supplies much as the original troop did.
