Bonfires on the Levee

Lutcher, Louisiana

This tradition of lighting the way for Papa Noel on Christmas Eve is more than 150 years old. Gayle and I went to The Festival of the Bonfires and then walked the levee looking at Bonfires in different stages of construction. It is a wonderful site to see when they are all lit.

Yeah Breland, I too am looking forward to seeing them lit. What great image that should be.

Sounds like a wonderful tradition. I'm looking forward to seeing them lit. I suppose they do it at night?

So cool, Breland. Will the road be open that night, or will be be closed for walkers?

The roped off patches are numbers burned in the grass. This is football country and the numbers represent a player in that family.

Thank you for sharing your local tradition Breland. Very interesting and colorful... I was intrigued with your history when I visited New Orleans.

I saw this on Gayle's gallery and loved it there and I love it just as much in your gallery. This is amazing. I hope one or both of you take a photo of the bonfires once they are lit. It is an amazing tradition.
