Along the fortified embankment, there are docking points for boats and promenade paths, which are often used for cycling tours or walks.
Pfalzgrafenstein castle is situated on the small island of Falkenau, right in the middle of the Rhine River, near the town of Kaub.
It was constructed in 1327 as a toll castle to levy shipping tolls on passing vessels. Due to its unusual, ship-like shape and its location within the river,
it is considered a distinctive landmark of the Rhine Romanticism era. The site is also renowned for the spectacular crossing of the Rhine
by Prussian troops under General Blücher at the turn of the year 1813–14.
