The Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen, a significant industrial monument and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The mine operated from 1851 to 1986 and was at times considered the largest and most modern coal mining facility in the world.
The site is a landmark of the Ruhr region and attracts millions of visitors annually who want to experience the history of mining and the structural transformation of the region.
The structures of Shaft XII visible today were designed by architects Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer and are a well-known example of Bauhaus architecture in industry.
