Even before, but especially during the French Revolution, the Conciergerie served as a prison for up to 1,200 prisoners.
Famous prisoners included Marie-Antoinette, Marie-Jeanne Dubarry, François Ravaillac, Georges Danton and Maximilien de Robespierre.
