Don Juan de Austria, Knight John of Austria, was born in Regensburg on February 24, 1547. As the illegitimate son of Emperor Charles V and the Regensburg bourgeois daughter Barbara Blomberg, he was not only commander of the Spanish fleet, but also governor of the Habsburg Netherlands. In Regensburg, his birthplace, there has been a memorial on Zieroldsplatz since 1978 to commemorate Don Juan de Austria.
