The twin green buildings were built in 1880, and with the steel rafters and the upper levels with cheap bars full of old men early in the morning, are faintly similar to the Central Market Hall in Budapest, which was built a few years later. It’s not surprising that Rijeka’s market hall looks a lot like the one in Budapest: at the time that it was built Croatia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Rijeka was its main port.
