Bulgaria is a Balkan country whose contrasting landscapes include the Black Sea coast, a mountainous interior, and rivers such as the Danube.
The country's culture is influenced by Greek, Slavic, Ottoman, and Persian elements. From these influences has emerged a long and rich tradition in dance, music, folk costumes, and handicrafts. The capital, Sofia, lies at the foot of the Vitosha Mountains and was founded in the 5th century BC.
