this guy , (well it seems eons ago) was probably less than 15 meters away and as I recall this was without the 1.4 telextender, but do not trust that part of the memory. He was indeed close around some tourist docks in St. Maarten. To make you feel bad I actually lost his bill because I overestimated the distance and did not get it into the frame. I should have been at 120-140 for for some buffer space around him. I would be more willing now with the MK II to allow for some cropping. Docks and fishermen hangouts appear to be the best place. The focal length was only 170 mm and it was cropped to 3/4 the original from my 10D. I have not been able to get anywhere close enough just at the beach since they seem to stay off at least 50-60 meters to dive except when overhead (probably not enough diving depth at a shallow beach) I go to Englewood near my dad's from here in Tupelo. I have used the converter and even with the lighter 400 mmF5.6 lens it can be heavy. The 1D MK II even exacerbates the weight issue. With or without the TC this was taken with the 550 ex flash and that is at least comparable to the 10D and 100-400 with 1.4TC . Try it you'll like it :-)

Hi George,
I know I asked you about this image earlier, but this weekend I was at the beach taking photos of the diving pelicans, but they were a little too far away to get a great photo. Maybe you were a little closer on yours. I was thinking of trying the teleconverter but I think the whole assembly would be a little too cumbersome to follow the pelicans with.
