A Mountain of Garbage

The dumpsite itself is like a giant pyramid with an access road carved onto the side. Trucks haul new trash to the top, piling the garbage higher and higher, forming a literal mountain of trash overlooking Payatas. Scavengers surround pile after pile of newly unloaded garbage, scrambling to find re-saleable trash.

These people are at the very bottom of society's food chain. They work, eat, and live around this mountain of garbage. The conditions are hard to stomach. Still, I hear the pay is good for a good day's work, which is one reason why scavengers don't leave for other jobs.

I was at the summit of 'Mt.Basura.' Two security guards approached me and asked me re my purpose. I said to them that i'm a payatas resident and therefore it's only natural that I can be up here. But despite my reasoning -- "bawal ako" (I'm prohibited) at the summit. They said that I need to get an ID at Tres. Yes, I'll get my own ID soon i told them. (I thought of joining a scavenging association.) I just thanked God that two of my neighbors, scavengers themselves, were there to support my claim. However, I suspect that they already recorded my presence there for their intelligence. I was at the summit of Mt. Basura and it's hell up there. My residence in Payatas as an evangelical pastor will lead me to a strenuous journey, reflection, and praxis. Of course, things are still ahead of me to find out. So far, I just thank God for the privilege of serving the poor of Payatas. Let's join the Christian band (regardless of tradition/affiliation) in doing service to the poor.

i am really sad when i watch this pictures,this is filipino life,this people really want's to survive.these are good images for our leaders to see,and do their promises,to give filipinos a better life.hope u can get more photos .

Bobby, its about time you won some award for taking such photos, the world should see what this rubish dump really is, a horrible festering sore on society, even in such a living hell you capture the smiling faces.
