It's been a year since our first vaccination program for Hepatitis B at the Payatas community, the community living on the fringe of Metro Manila's garbage dump. That spared 400 children from this dreaded disease.
This year we raised enough money to vaccinate another 530 children. An improvement for sure, but Fr. Aldrin (Vincentian Missionaries parish priest) now estimates that up to 4,000 children in this community may lack this crucial immunization. Oops, we have 3,070 kids to go! (Like last year, the kind doctors at GSK administered the shots for free. Thanks.)
The hepatitis vaccine is given in three doses spaced about a month apart. We will be back to cheer the kids next month. (If you would like to help in any way, please contact me at bobby@wong.com.ph or call Fr. Aldrin at +63 920 841 8817. It only costs about US$10 to immunize a child for life. How much is his life worth? Thanks.)
