C72 Panoramas

From My Cyberjournal 72July 2006 copyright/all rights reserved/Alfredo Roces
======================================================
Both the human eye and the camera have physically limited vision, and this is where a panoramic composite of photos can provide a refreshing viewpoint. While you really need a tripod to stitch a more accurate series of images, to me the visible border lines of the photos help to inform the viewer that he/she is looking at a composite and not the 180 degree image that the human eye cannot encompass in one fixed gaze. To show the entire island I had to face one direction first, and then by taking a series of shots, ended up with my back to the first photo scene as I aimed the camera in the opposite direction.

There will be those who will see this panorama composites as too contrived, more "photoshop" than photography; but these same purists would not hesitate to use wide angle, telephoto, even fish eye lenses. It's a digital view. A painter has less inhibitions about the legitimacy of capturing what he can see by moving his eyes across a scene. Even without the benefit of a tripod, I enjoyed the experiment.

Given a little practice it could be perfected; although in my approach to art, imperfection has always been an important element I like to preserve in the work itself.
