Yellow-legged Honeycreepers or Purple Sugarbirds, Cyanerpes caeruleus, are widespread throughout South and Latin America. There are five recognized sub-species.
Yellow Winged Sugarbird comes from the majority of northern South America through to Central America and some of the Caribbean islands.
Plumage Colouration: The male Yellow Winged Sugarbird is primarily purple except for virtually the whole of the wing tail, ventral area, mantle and eye stripes of which are black. The nape is a beautiful electric/aquamarine blue. This species takes its name from the underwing coverts which are bright buttercup yellow and can only be observed when in flight or stretching its wings. Males do not attain full adult colour until they are between 18-24 months old.
Females are mainly dirty grey/green above and greeny cream below with green striations. Juveniles are identical to the female.
