Wright Brothers National Memorial is located in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., not Kitty Hawk. The first powered airplane flight took place in Kill Devil Hills, not Kitty Hawk. There has never been an airplane flight in Kitty Hawk!!! Never!!! The Wright Brothers stayed their first night on the Outer Banks in Kitty Hawk, the only time they ever stayed there. Kitty Hawk is 5 miles north of this monument. I was born and grew up 1 mile north of this monument, in Kill Devil Hills. he confusion arose because the only U.S. Weather Station was located in Kitty Hawk Village, and had the only telegraph on the Outer Banks. The Wright Brothers sent someone to the telegraph office to send a telegram to their father in Dayton, Ohio, and the telegraph message had to be "relayed" in Norfolk, VA. The telegram was sent with a location byline, "From Kitty Hawk". Someone in the Norfolk VA telegraph office gave a copy to the local Norfolk newspaper (The Virginian Pilot) which immediately ran a story that the first powered air flight had occurred at Kitty Hawk - this was picked up by the Associated Press, and relayed throughout the world. All of that said, there has never been an airplane flight in Kitty Hawk, the place still does not even have an airplane landing strip. Understand??? BTW, great worldwide pictures - you are gifted. thanks--
