The overlapping layers in this image seem to go on forever, giving it great depth and dimensionality. Rendering it in black and white reduces it to its elemental forms and textures while eliminating the viewers' reliance on color. Since color wasn't likely an important ingredient in this winter scene, the use of black and white is very effective. Note too how the diagonal lines make the image very dynamic. They imply movement and enhance the layering of the fog. Also, the foreground trees stand out against the foggy backdrop, adding sharp contrast against the softer fog.
