At the very base of the rod shaped flower parts in the center of this flower you will see a small white scale-like bit shaped like a miniature crown. This is called the pappus. That bit of fluff makes this a Cichorum or chickory, as the blue lettuce has no pappus. Also the reddish tips to involucral bracts, those small bracts surrounding the base of the flower are usually indicative of chickory. het
