Mamane Community

Halepohaku, Mauna Kea

Mamane trees harbor a community of plants on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea, and the collection in this picture is very typical. A stenogyne microphylla grows entwined with the mamane's branches on the left, while an 'aheahea (chenopodium) grows in its shadow on the lower right. Grasses grow underneath the mamane, taking advantage of shade and trapped moisture.
