This 3-foot tall specimen from the main colony shows the characteristics that help differentiate cyanea platyphylla from cyanea tritomantha - smaller size, regulary spaced medium sized leaves on fairly thin main stems, and the flowers and fruits form an upward-pointing cluster on a small stalk off the main stem. Platyphylla leaf margins also seem to be more often toothed, whereas tritomantha leaf edges seem to be straighter. This individual was growing in a mat of more than a dozen plants of all ages, some of which were branched. I'm not sure if the branched main stems are the result of damage, or another identifying characteristic of the species.
