When it was discovered in the 1970's this small bog was home to hundreds of silverswords. Unfortunately pigs also discovered the bog soon after, and quickly wrecked the bog and uprooted all but about 40 small silverswords. The first exclosure to protect the remaining silverswords was built by the state and the Sierra Club in 1984. In the same year the 1984 lava flow came very close to burying the bog in lava, but fortunately stopped just short. The silversword population in the bog has been roughly stable since then, and the state plans to fence the rest of the bog soon. When I arrived a large pig was rooting just outside the fence, but this bog is in better shape than the larger one where the outplanted silversword exclosure is.
