This 12 foot tall 'akia (wikstroemia sandwicensis) tree was part of a population growing on a fairly recent (1855?) pahoehoe lava field on the windward Saddle just below Tree Planting Road. Its large (~2" wide) leathery leaves are very different than other 'akia trees in this gallery - either the rainforest 'akia trees near Stainback Highway, or the dryforest 'akia trees in Manuka NAR - showing the effects exposure to Sun and wind. The yellowish leaves are probably due to the poor soil.
