The weather was even wetter and windier on Sunday! I headed back up to Volcano Village, expecting that I'd end up at my final option in bad weather - Strip Road. Indeed, that was the case. I tried to go up Wright Road, but stopped at 'Ola'a Small Tract because it was obviously raining too hard to make the rainforest worth exploring. However, when I crossed over to the leeward side I found that Strip Road was sunny and hot! It was also extremely windy, and the big trees in Kipuka Puaulu and Kipuka Ki were groaning and cracking, and occasionally crashing!

The 'ohi'a bloom and weather together caused a traffic-jam of 'apapane, and I twice had point counts over 40 with several birds in various trees around me - impossible to count, so I guesstimated each nearby tree and totalled them up. Other birds were also active and vocal, and the counts were high frequency-wise (vs. total numbers) for just about everything. I only bothered to count Kipuka Puaulu and Kipuka Ki - I was a bit bummed out about the bad weather this weekend, and didn't have the energy to do the usual stop-and-go counting up the length of Strip Road.
