Cub Up a Tree

This guy was in a very small and deeply eroded weed lined creek in an open field. I got to within 15-20 feet of him several times but could not get him to raise his head high enough for a decent photo. After twenty frustrating minutes he left the branch at a run and entered woods nearby. I waited a few minutes for him to calm down and then I followed him. I lucked out as he hadn't gotten very far and had started climbing a small tree. The light was so poor I had to push the ISO to Hi-1. Got the noise out with Neat Image which I finally found a use for. Handheld 1/50 at 340mm but I did brace it against another tree for the shot. Thanks to that VR lenses it is passable.

Outstanding capture, Buz.........but if I were you, I'd be trading in that Nikon for a big "Canon" just in case the cubs momma shows up!!! LOL..........you are a brave man.

Great capture!! It takes a lot of guts to follow a cub into the woods!! I would be moving in the opposite direction. LOL!! Super shot! vote

Wow...amazing capture, your ability to find these wild critters is impressive for sure! I hope you kept a keen eye over your shoulder looking for Moma Bear..

Fantastic catch. He is so cute. Hope mama wasn't around.:) You did a fine job with the pp. Even after using NI, you still have all the detail.

Well done Buz. I use Neat Image on 75% of my shots. Of course the old D Rebel has a bit more noise than your D2X. I also shoot most of my shots in low light or at night and you shoot most of yours during the day.

Nice shot, Buz. I saw a couple of bears when I was on early morning runs when I lived in Kentucky (the old joke is true: I don't have to be able to outrun the bear; I just have to be able to outrun at least one of the other runners I was with). He does look small. I'd have been looking out for momma.

Great shot Buzz, I have never seen one in the wild, just crossing roads. IS is amazing isnt it, you've seen my owls shot at 1/60s at 400mm, right.
Guest 14-Jun-2006 21:47
Very impressive! If I was seeing one, I would probably not stay close by very long. You did well with the little light you had. Bravo.
