Such areas/locations/places/situations are common even in the most 'advanced' countries throughout the world. The very concept of CITY has evolved from the West (industrialization). There would be no end to this debate....however....lets be a little more realistic.

If you show the downside of a country you are on the road to addressing the enormous differences which exist in this world between the poor and the super-wealthy of which India has many. While never having been there myself due to health issues of my auto-immune system I have friends who have and who confirmed the ENORMOUS contrasts which the rich would rather ignore than address, actually worldwide. I applaud you Birte for your courage to show these images instead of the palaces, the Taj Mahal and the gated mansions.
We all have seen them - most people out of shame prefer not to look at reality such as poverty, arranged marriages, abortion of female fetuses, prostitution ( including an enormous amount of child prostitution), HIV and rather focus on huge weddings with thousands of attendants. Just think what that money could do for the poor.

I first saw you picutres when I joined P base and I was very impressed by them. You did comment on one of my pictures, as well. I am of Indian origin and I must say that I am very distrubed by your pictures. I did read all the other comments, but if you put all the pictures that show the difficulties of life on an average Indian in a country that was ruled by foreigners for centuries and as a country that has just begun to take baby steps of freedom, I would say that as a country and a race, we have not done too badly. In addition, since you are a popular photographer, your pictures will be viewed by a significantly large number of people, I consider that it is your duty to portray the truth as acurately as possible. India is a land of paradox and I wish you could have portrayed that and the fact that India is the most tolerant of countries. It has never been an aggressor and has never invaded any country. If you wish to obtain any information on the peaceful history of India, I would be happy to share it with you. I wish you could have show the resilience of India. In spite of such difficulties, you will find that people are still smiling and you will truely experience such spiritual peace and calmness in India as you will not any where else.

I am glad to hear that from the pictures you want to point out the places we need to get cleaned up. But I am not sure how many Indians visit this website. If these pictures are available for Indians then they are useful for this purpose. Else, other people will see them and just thank God that they are not living in India, as India for them is just these pictures they are seeing. I hope more and more Indians can see these pictures to realize that we seriously need to do something about this problem.
I have saved this page in my favorites and will make sure that I keep on checking this gallery every now and then to see some more pictures from you :)

Reshu, you are quite right in what you say,I have many shots of the beautiful places you mention, which will be posted as I get to them.Also India is not the only place I show the downside of, take a look at my democracy at work gallery from the USA.I am an environmentalist, and what I am pointing out is not just the poverty, but the need to get places such as this cleaned up if we are going to have any chance of saving the planet.We cannot combat climate change until we tackle problems such as this and give people a better way of life.Now I hope you will keep looking at the gallery to see what else is posted.Also I happen to love India and spend a lot of time here working .

I was just browsing this site and reached this gallery. I have no idea, why people who don't belong to India, always click only such pictures. Yes, we do have such places but NOT ONLY this. We have beautiful places, clean places, Industrial places, big and beautiful houses with all the advanced features and facilities, but you would never click them. And this is the reason why people have a certain image about India. that's why when I came to US, my friends said that I cannot be an Indian as I was not dirty and poor looking and the pictures I showed them of India, they could never believe that India could be so beautiful. I know the things shown in the pictures are different for you and that's why you get attracted to click them but you have no idea how these pictures impact India's impression on other people.
