26th - Dead Gate

Hawling, Glos. view map

The lychgate into the churchyard at St. Edward's in Hawling; lych is derived from the Old English word 'lic' which means corpse, so a lychgate is the gate through which a corpse is brought on its last journey before being interred in the graveyard. Some lychgates are elaborate affairs, others are simple and plain - St. Edward's sort of falls between the two I think.

Not sure about the angle or composition of this shot - I was out scouting for gates at the weekend but it was so blinkin' cold I grabbed this shot without too much heed of what it looked like....opinions??

For a view from the other side, see below:

Very fine capture in b&w tones, superb architecture and perspective. V.

Crackin' texture and tone.

I like this POV too giving a view of the ceiling detail. And it's something new for me too as I've never come across
one of these before.

IMO, you made a quick shot because all these entrances to go to our last house are not very attractive :-))))
But even if you were speed, nothing is bad in this picture.
The low point of view allows to see detail of the ceiling of this door architecture.
There is a nice perspective reinforced by the banister.
Just the sky is a bit too white....

I do like this in B+W. And I like your low POV too, looking upwards through the lynch-gate

Looks spooky....I love this. I love the composition and how it frames the cemetery beyond. It is very well done. V!

I like the angle - the eye is led right up the banister.

The POV makes me feel that this is a difficult gate to approach, the tombstones seen through it add a somber note. All come together perfectly in B&W. Seen from the other side, it looks like a happier passageway. *V*

Very interesting information! I like this in B&W. As Lynn says, it adds a grittiness that is somehow in keeping with the trad meaning of the word Lychgate! The composition is interesting, with the view upward rather than straight on. Adds interest I think. V

This is a super gate and thank you for the very interesting description of the lychgate and it's history. Love your photo in black and white, it has a gritty darkness that goes well with the subject. I do like your composition!
