6th - Camouflage

Woollas Hall, Eckington, Worcs. view map

This is from a long walk yesterday across Bredon Hill - on the way back, we past Woollas Hall on the north of the hill. Something made me turn as we went past one of the outbuildings and I spotted this odd couple out of the corner of my eye. I don't know how old this statue is, if it's a representation of an authentic story or just someone's idea brought to life. Judging by the helmet, the soldier looks like a WW1 vintage British 'Tommy'...does anybody know of any Tommy and wren stories??

maybe Doug is the bird symbolic for the canaries they used in WW1 in the trenches to smell gas?
they must have some information there, I guess
very impressive statue, great find

There's a story here for sure. Dig enough and you're sure to find it. Perfect for the word.

Just a guess, but I think it's more likely to be depicting one of the " Home Guard/ Home Front " men of WW11. The ones who gave their time to keep their eyes on the homelands safety while the men & boys were away overseas.
Remember the song sung by Vera Lynn & the words; "There'll be blue birds over, the white cliffs of Dover, tomorrow just you wait and see" those words gave hope that all would be good again after the war was over.
Perhaps the artist placed the importance on both...

Excellent find, Doug! Can't really help you, unless the Wren is a symbol of home. During WWII the George VI farthings had a Wren on the reverse side.
Phillip Normanton06-Apr-2010 19:21
Was the wren called Ivy? :o)
